ABOUT RIN

In February 2009, at the meeting in Bangkok, Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) and 16 research institutes from East Asia Summit Countries signed the memorandum of understanding and agreed to establish the Research Institutes Network (RIN) to support ERIA on research, capacity development, and dissemination of research outcomes. Bangkok Research Center (BRC), JETRO Bangkok/IDE-JETRO organized this meeting and continues to undertake a role as the secretariat of RIN, contributing to RIN’s activities such as the RIN annual meeting, RIN website, and workshops among 16 research institutes.

Message from Chairperson of RIN
Dr. Hank Lim

The Research Institutes Network (RIN) has an important role to support Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia’s (ERIA) research activity and programs through providing ERIA with country information and research findings from 16 East Asian Summit Countries.

Established in 2009, the Research Institutes Network (RIN) consists of research institutes from 16 East Asia Summit Countries. RIN has been a very important partner with ERIA (Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia) to support ERIA’s research activity and programs through providing ERIA with country information and research findings from individual countries and giving advice to ERIA’s research theme and policy recommendations. Equally, RIN serves to encourage the dissemination of ERIA’s research outcomes to policy makers and to support ERIA’s capacity building programs. With the establishment of the RIN Website, it is expected that the level of cooperation and partnership with ERIA would be enhanced more efficiently, timely and widely.

The objective of the RIN Website is to provide a central informational digital base for all RIN member institutes, and to complement to each RIN member institute’s individual website on administrative and research matters, such as RIN events, meetings, workshops and new publications by RIN researchers on a voluntary basis. In addition, the RIN Website could serve as RIN Researchers Directory with their homepages’ links.

The extent of success of this RIN Website is much dependent on each RIN member institute’s collaboration and commitment. Therefore, I look forward to your support and responsibility as the important stakeholders of the Research Institutes Network.

Lastly, I would like to express my appreciation and thanks to Institute of Developing Economies (IDE-JETRO) and Bangkok Research Center (BRC) as the RIN secretariat for the establishment and management of the RIN Website.

I would also like to appreciate to the 16 RIN member institutes for their full support to establish the RIN website.

Message from President of ERIA
Mr. Tetsuya Watanabe

I am pleased to extend a warm welcome to the expansion of the activities of the Research Institute Network (RIN), which was established in 2009. RIN serves as an association of leading research institutes from the 16 member countries of the East Asia Summit (as of 2009). The cooperation between RIN and the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) has been highly significant, enhancing the relevance of ERIA's research projects to each country's specific policy research agenda.

I genuinely hope that RIN will evolve into a centre of excellence for research institutions in the region, providing timely economic analysis and offering valuable policy recommendations for economic integration and development. Particularly, in an era where new technologies have the potential to revolutionise existing business and social paradigms, the speed and effectiveness of their adoption and adaptation are crucial for further regional growth. Human resource development is essential for harnessing these technologies, and this new research trend is indispensable for the East Asia Summit (EAS) region. RIN and ERIA will play pivotal roles in translating research into concrete policy recommendations.

I would like to express my sincere gratitude for the invaluable support of RIN, which has been an indispensable partner in ERIA's research and policy advisory activities since its inception. This website serves as an important knowledge hub for the region, and RIN is evolving from a mere network into a fully-fledged regional organisation that garners high respect worldwide.

Finally, I wish to express my appreciation to Dr Hank Lim, Chair of RIN, as well as the Institute of Developing Economies (IDE-JETRO) and the Bangkok Research Center (BRC) for their dedicated efforts in developing RIN from its inception and for serving as the RIN Secretariat. I would also like to thank the 16 RIN member institutions for their fruitful cooperation.

Message from RIN Secretariat
Dr. Yasushi Ueki
(President of Bangkok Research Center, JETRO Bangkok, IDE-JETRO)

The RIN is a core network of East Asian research networks to connect researchers and policymakers in East Asia. It has the strong potential to evolve into an open platform for research collaborations among research institutes and researchers, promoting global cooperation across different academic fields.

The RIN is an independent regional network of 16 research institutes from East Asia Summit Countries, established in 2009. The RIN member institutes cooperate with ERIA on research activities, capacity building, dissemination of research outcomes, and other ERIA-related activities to promote economic integration, narrowing development gaps, and sustainable development in East Asia, under the strong leadership of Dr. Hank Lim, the Chairperson of RIN, and H.E. Prof. Tetsuya Watanabe, the President of ERIA. The Bangkok Research Center (BRC)/Institute of Developing Economies supports intellectual cooperation between the ERIA and the RIN member institutes as the RIN Secretariat.

The pillars of RIN activities include the RIN meeting, the RIN online workshop, and the RIN website. The RIN meeting is the most important regular occasion for the President of the ERIA and the representatives of the RIN member institutes to interact face to face, strengthen their ties, share knowledge and views on key policy issues, and deepen their mutual understanding, all of which are indispensable to enhancing ERIA’s research activities. The RIN online workshop, which the RIN Secretariat develops four to five times a year, is a research exchange activity to involve younger researchers from the RIN member institutes in the ERIA and RIN-related activities. The RIN website, which the RIN Secretariat maintains, is a platform to share information on the RIN and individual RIN member’s activities and facilitate collaborations among the ERIA and the RIN member institutes. These activities lead to the continued contributions of the RIN to ERIA’s research activities, which ERIA experts conduct in cooperation with external experts from the RIN member institutes and other institutions from East Asia and other regions.

There is still room to strengthen the RIN. The RIN member institutions can develop more interactive relationships and collaborations with each other, independent of ERIA-related activities. I expect that the RIN will be able to contribute to not only regional but also global issues as a group of national centers of excellence by connecting their own national and international research networks to each other. Closer and greater collaborative networks of the RIN will lead to a stronger research foundation of ERIA.
